FTS cleaning up with Environment Canada

Forest Technology Systems (FTS) has landed a $1.7 million contract to provide data loggers to Environment Canada’s Water Survey of Canada.

Forest Technology Systems (FTS) has landed a $1.7 million contract to provide data loggers to Environment Canada’s Water Survey of Canada.

The systems will be used to gather, analyze, record and transmit data from streams, rivers and drinking water reservoirs.

“This contract win is a significant milestone for FTS' hydrology division," CEO David Illing said in a press release.

"Our efforts to focus on the most environmentally hardened equipment available and to really listen to our customers when it comes to product design are paying off."

FTS is best known around the globe for its weather monitoring systems technology, which is used to predict, prevent and manage wildfires.

Recently, the company’s weather systems data was used to manage and plan a response to the forest fires that ravaged the Slave Lake area in Alberta.

British Columbians will be familiar with some of the work FTS does when they see roadside signs warning of the degree of risk for forest fires.

“We supply gear to every one of the North American top 50 forest management agencies,” explained Illing. “So when you see a fire danger rating sign at the side of the road, that was computed based on data from one of our stations.

“This critical data saves lives and help predict, prevent and control wildfires, with extremely accurate weather data.”

Company sales have grown 68%. It has also added 12 new employees in the last year and plans to add eight more.
