The Dow Jones Sustainability Index has dropped Vancouver-based Goldcorp Inc. (TSX:G) from its list of sustainable companies.
The announcement comes amid ongoing allegations of human rights violations and environmental contamination in Guatemala and Honduras, where Goldcorp mines gold.
Jennifer Moore, who is the Latin American program coordinator for MiningWatch Canada, told Business in Vancouver that she is pleased the mining giant has been removed from the index.
“We welcome the decision,” Moore told Business in Vancouver September 21.
“We believe that Goldcorp, under current circumstances, should not be rewarded for not having taken significant action to remedy and address serious evidence of environmental contamination and allegations of human rights violations at its mine sites.”
MiningWatch Canada is an organization that is supported by environmental, social justice, aboriginal and labour organizations across Canada.
