Last night Business in Vancouver honoured C-suite executives who do jobs that often get little public applause.

BIV’s first annual BC CFO of the Year Awards set out to recognize chief financial officers who demonstrate strong leadership in finance and who contribute to their organization’s strategic decision-making and growth.

Richard Rees, CEO of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia and presenting sponsor of the awards, said: “The role of a CFO today is complex – reflecting the world we live in. Compliance with many new regulations, such as international financial reporting standards, and continued global economic integration have made the role of measuring, forecasting and planning for business growth and stability all the more challenging and vital.

“This audience knows that successful CFOs are strategic partners to the CEO, can tell the company’s story to a variety of audiences, and know how to build good teams that thrive in our ever-changing business climate.”

This year’s winner in the large public company category was:

  • Allan Baydala, Port Metro Vancouver;

Runners-up:

  • John E. Currie, lululemon athletica inc.; and
  • Don Leslie, A&W Revenue Royalties Income Fund.

Winner in the small public company category was:

  • Sherry Tryssenaar, Ten Peaks Coffee Company (Swiss Water);

Runners-up:

  • Cindy Turner, Capilano University; and
  • Peter Wong, Plutonic Power Corporation.

Winner in the private company category was:

  • Zvonko Maretic, Pharmasave Drugs;

Runners-up:

  • Stephen Mavety, uniPHARM Wholesale Drugs Ltd.;and
  • Michael Taylor, Nicola Wealth Management.

A fourth category, transformation agent, honoured CFOs at non-profits, Crown corporations and small private companies. It also recognized emerging leaders for their strategic excellence, exceptional growth and leadership.

Winners in the transformation agent category were:

  • Duncan Campbell, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority;
  • Sarah Hoffman, Health Care Benefits Trust;
  • Terry Krepiakevich, SouthGobi Resources Ltd.;and
  • Brian Pettipas, Global Container Terminals Inc.
