An upstart organization backed by some of the most influential women in the province is raising money to help fight ovarian cancer.
Despite a choppy economic outlook, nine corporate sponsors have chipped in $10,000 each and 800 people have purchased $99 tickets for a lunch scheduled on September 10. Capacity for the event is 1,000.
The movement started when Business Council of British Columbia (BCBC) chair Virginia Greene agreed to accept Pace Group principal Norman Stowe’s offer to help her organize the event.
Greene was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in July 2009 and has resigned her position at the BCBC effective the end of August 2010.
Several high-profile women promptly agreed to become co-chairs.
They include:
“We’re up to 800 tickets sold so far,” Stowe told Business in Vancouver. “We’ve had to change ballrooms at the convention centre.”
The nine corporate sponsors include Telus Corp. (TSX:T), Vancity and Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TCK).
