Nearly half of Canadians feel more secure about their jobs now than a year ago, according to a Monster.ca survey

About 46% of Canadian workers responding to the Harris/Decima survey said they felt more job security now than a year ago, and 88% said they were satisfied with their current job situation.

Canadians in Manitoba and Saskatchewan enjoyed the highest feelings of job security.

The survey also found that Canadians working in the public sector felt more secure in their jobs than those in the private sector. However, perception about public sector work varied. While the majority of Canadians felt that government work is rewarding and makes a real difference, 64% of private sector workers and 39% of public sector workers believed government workers were overpaid.

With a pending national labour shortage as baby boomers retire, 94% of respondents believe governments should do more to help people with disabilities access the job market and 71% said there should be greater effort to attract and utilize foreign-trained professionals.

About 60% favour eliminating the mandatory retirement age and 55% support giving teenagers aged 14 to 16 greater access to the job market.
