Large greenhouse gas producers to be required to report emissions

Victoria is implementing new regulations requiring all facilities in B.C. that emit more than 10,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year to publicly report their emissions.

The government estimates approximately 200 facilities will be affected by the new regulation that comes into effect January 1, 2010.

B.C. is the first province to require annual GHG reporting with a threshold of 10,000 tonnes. Other provinces, like Ontario, are looking into reporting requirements at the 25,000-tonne level.

The new regulations are part of B.C.'s role in the development of a regional cap and trade system within the Western Climate Initiative that includes six western U.S. states, Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba.
