Local champions of women in business honoured internationally

The International Alliance for Women announced the winners of its 2011World of Difference 100 Awards yesterday.

Eight candidates from B.C. were recognized for their work promoting and supporting the advancement of women in business.

The 2011 awards to the B.C. recipients were granted in the following categories:

  • Laurel Douglas, CEO of Women’s Enterprise Centre, education;
  • Jill Earthy, CEO of the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs (FWE), community;
  • Bob Elton, chairman of the board of governors of Simon Fraser University, male champion of women’s economic empowerment;
  • Paulina Lipska, president of Young Women in Business, young women leader under 25;
  • Anne Lippert, principal of Anne Lippert Consulting, corporate (individual women) category;
  • Barbara Mowat, president of Impact Communications, entrepreneurial category;
  • Michelle Pockey, partner at Fasken Martineau, entrepreneurial category; and
  • Jennifer Sung, vice-president, Young Women in Business, young women leader under 25.

Commenting on the high levels of co-operation between many of the B.C. women’s business organizations represented with these awards, Jill Earthy of the FWE told Business in Vancouver: “The Vancouver Women’s Business Consortium was co-founded by Laurel Douglas, Women’s Enterprise Centre and myself over two years ago with the vision of bringing together representatives from over 20 women’s business networks in Vancouver on a regular basis to learn and share ideas.

“I believe that collaboration is the key to business success. It is a thrill to be a part of this group and to see us grow and thrive together. Being recognized on a global scale for the work we do to empower women is a true honour and a tribute to the power of collaboration.”
