Vancouverites are willing to sacrifice size for convenience when it comes to buying a home, according to an REW.ca survey conducted by the Mustel Research Group.

The survey found that 44% of Vancouverites would compromise on the size of their home and 43% would compromise on the size of their lot. The most important factor in buying a home, for 44% of survey respondents, was the style of their home.

A similar percentage (41%) said the most important factor was the home's proximity to amenities.

“What this tells us is that people in the Lower Mainland want a certain style of home, but in reality they're willing to compromise on this for livability factors such as living close to amenities with lower commute times,” said REW.ca’s general manager, Ian Martin.

When past and future home buyers were asked about where in Metro Vancouver they would choose to live, assuming that it was affordable, 33% chose Vancouver.

The majority of respondents wanted to stay in their current municipality or area:

  • 82% - Vancouver
  • 81% - North Shore
  • 68% - Richmond/South Delta/Tsawwassen/White Rock
  • 60% - Fraser Valley
  • 56% - Burnaby/ New Westminster
  • 52% - Tri-Cities/Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows.
