The majority of Canadian employers still do not have a policy addressing the use of wireless devices while driving, according to a survey by Aon Consulting Canada.
The survey found 56% do not have a policy and only 38% are considering creating one, despite the fact that every province is now considering legislation banning cell phone use while behind the wheel.
Ontario was the latest to ban cell phone use while driving, following similar legislation passed over the years by Newfoundland, Quebec and Nova Scotia.
B.C.'s cell phone ban comes into effect January 1, while the remaining five provinces are in various stages of considering similar legislation.
For organizations that already have a policy on cell phone use, more than 70% say their company policy covers both corporate wireless devices and personal cell phones.
About 27% say they have completely banned the use of wireless devices while driving for business reasons. Just over half (55%) of companies that provide a company wireless device also provide a hands-free attachment.
