MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX: MDA) has landed a $31 million contract with the Canadian Department of National Defence.

MDA will provide two mobile satellite receiving stations for Canada’s Joint Space Support Project.

The surveillance systems can be deployed anywhere and will allow DND commanders to download imagery from commercial satellites that are passing over areas of interest, according to a press release issued Wednesday.

DND commanders will be able to use information from multiple satellites for domestic missions, including border security and enforcing Arctic sovereignty. The ground stations can also be used overseas in peace-keeping missions and disaster relief.
