Richmond's MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX:MDA) has signed a $4.7 million contract with the Department of National Defence to upgrade the imaging radar systems on Canada's fleet of Aurora patrol aircraft.
When the upgrades are complete, the aircraft will be better able to detect, track and photograph stationary and moving targets on land and sea.
Canada's CP140 Aurora's were first acquired by Canada in 1980 and are used primarily for maritime surface and sub-surface surveillance.
The deal comes a week after MDA was awarded a multimillion-dollar contract to expand a high-resolution satellite system for an unnamed client.
Both contracts build on MDA's space division, the sale of which was blocked by the federal government earlier in May.
MDA's share price range during the past week: between $40.40 and $41.69; 52-week high: $50.90; 52-week low: $37.38.
