Vancouver-based Modo the Car Co-op has added the first fully electric vehicle to its 250-vehicle fleet.
The City of Vancouver is providing Modo with charging capacity at a city-owned EasyPark parking lot at West 10th Avenue and Cambie Street.
“We’re getting a Nissan LEAF,” Modo marketing director Bernice Paul told Business in Vancouver November 1.
“It drives just like any vehicle. It goes up to the same speeds. It’s not like a glorified golf cart. You can take it on the highway. It’s just like a regular vehicle, only one that doesn’t take gasoline.”
The non-profit Modo, which has 8,049 car-share members, was originally known as Vancouver’s Co-operative Auto Network (CAN). It was North America’s first car-sharing venture when it launched in the mid-1990s.
Newer competitors include Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Zipcar (NYSE:ZIP) and Daimler AG subsidiary Car2Go.
