Vancouver-based Mountain Equipment Co-op is promoting Montreal's In Town Without My Car day on Thursday.

MEC employees at the outdoor equipment retailer will be biking from the MEC store at Marche Central to its kiosk in downtown Montreal.

Customers biking to the downtown MEC kiosk will receive a free minor bike tune-up and have a chance to win backpacks and water bottles during the day.

In Town Without My Car day, similar to B.C.'s Bike Week, is organized by Agence Metropolitaine de Transport with several corporate sponsors, including MEC. Montreal is one of 1,500 cities around the world participating in the event.

MEC, founded in 1971, has more than 2.6 million members. It recently joined One Percent for the Planet, an alliance of roughly 500 companies in 20 countries that have pledged to allocate 1% of their revenue to environmental initiatives.
