Freedom Medical Robotics, a Richmond-based subsidiary of Freedom Bionics, has announced the launch of two mobile phone applications that assist parents and users with disabilities.

The first application helps parents use mobile devices to supervise small children and their location, and the second assists people with cognitive impairments use mobile phone interfaces.

“This interface makes it really simple for them to use the phones, and it also allows us to pack some support software under the hood like location management — one button will show them how to get home,” said Douglas Kind, president and CEO of Freedom Bionics.

He also said the second application is targeted toward people with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments.

The company, which specializes in disability-access technology, is targeting the elderly and disabled, who typically have difficulty using mobile technology.

“The key thing for us is providing services that generally aren’t available,” said Kind.

Freedom Medical Bionics is also currently researching a computerized “exoskeleton” body suit designed to help paraplegics walk.

The company is a subsidiary of Yaletown Capital Corp. (TSX-V:YCC).

At press time, Yaletown’s shares were down $0.02 to $0.25.
