Construction has begun on a new medical school at UBC Okanagan that is slated to open in 2011 and will train up to 128 medical students by 2014.

The centre will include networked classrooms, research laboratories, faculty offices and lecture theatres connected to the other medical schools in Vancouver, Victoria and Prince George.

It will accommodate 32 first-year, full-time medical students in 2011, and increase to 128 students in various stages of training by 2014.

Provincial taxpayers will contribute $33.7 million to the project.

Their contribution is part of the $100 million the provincial government is contributing to a UBC Okanagan expansion that includes new arts and sciences and engineering and management buildings.
