The communities of northwest B.C. have combined forces to spur development and attract new investment with the launch of a web portal called Invest Northwest BC.

The initiative, announced this morning, details more than $15 billion dollars in major projects and investment opportunities planned in the region.

According to a release, Northwest B.C. has a wealth of under-developed forest, mineral, and coastal resources with numerous large-scale projects underway or planned within the coming decade.

Communities in Northwest BC have partnered with Northern Development Initiative Trust to develop the comprehensive Invest Northwest BC online resource. It allows investors to access up-to-date information on dozens of major projects and connects them with private developers and community leaders.

The release noted that BC Hydro’s Northwest Transmission Line leverages unprecedented private sector investment in the region and is regarded as a catalyst for the economic renewal of Northwest B.C.

Other major projects include Kitimat LNG’s new $4.5 billion liquefied natural gas terminal, Rio Tinto Alcan’s $2.5 billion smelter expansion in Kitimat, and an expansion of the Port of Prince Rupert.

Terrace Mayor David Pernarowski said, “The Invest in Northwest BC web portal is a vital tool to promote the region. It is the only online resource that can put into perspective the development that is happening in northwest British Columbia - it shows how we truly are on the verge of an economic boom.”
