New wireless carrier to sell phones in 7-Eleven

A new wireless carrier launching in Vancouver this month has signed a deal to sell phones and plans at 150 7-Eleven Canada stores in Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton.

7-Eleven is the first national convenience store chain to offer Mobilicity’s products.

Toronto’s Mobilicity will offer pay-in-advance unlimited talk, text and data plans, without a contract or credit check, at 7-Eleven in time for the holidays.

The Mobilicity’s phone plans range from $25 for unlimited texting and local calls to $65 for a “full menu” plan that includes additional unlimited features like long distance, call waiting and voice mail.

The caveat is that, while other phone providers heavily discount their phones to entice consumers into contracts, Mobilicity customers are required to pay full price for phones.

Mobilicity’s CEO Dave Dobbin told BIV last month that the company believes consumers will be comfortable with the upfront costs of buying a full-price phone if they don’t have to sign a contract, get unlimited minutes and experience smaller monthly phone bills (See “More calls waiting: Another wireless carrier out to eat Telus’ lunch in B.C. ” – BIV Business Today; October 27).

Mobilicity launched in Toronto earlier this year and will be launching in Vancouver this month. The company is hush about the exact launch date, but has already started marketing campaigns throughout the city.
