Nexterra Systems has signed a US$6.9 million contract to deliver clean heat and power to a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs medical centre in Michigan.
The Vancouver-based company, which has quickly become a darling of the local clean-tech industry, said Tuesday the biomass gasification system would help the Veterans Affairs department reach its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2020.
“Biomass gasification is the cleanest, most cost effective way for health care facilities and other public institutions to lower their fuel costs and GHGs,” commented Nexterra president and CEO Jonathan Rhone.
“This project is a significant commercial milestone for Nexterra as we expand into the health-care market.”
Business in Vancouver last caught up with Nexterra in March, when the company helped unveil a new wood-to-heat system at the University of Northern British Columbia.
At the time, Rhone said his company was planning on honing in on universities, hospitals, municipalities and industrial facilities – a market it assesses to be worth $20 billion.
Nexterra has also supplied commercial gasification systems to the U.S. Department of Energy, University of South Carolina, the Dockside Green development in Victoria and Tolko Industries.
