Somewhere in Mongolia there may be a Vancouverite who is suddenly feeling Stanley Cup fever. A new website called nucksforcup.com allows him or her to join a worldwide community of Vancouver Canucks fans through Twitter.
Idea Rebel, a Vancouver digital marketing agency, launched the website earlier this week.
“Basically it’s like a big fan website,” said Idea Rebel president Jamie Garratt.
Whether fans are at a live game or watching it on TV with a friends in Toronto – or Mongolia – all they need to do is snap a photo and tweet it, using a hashtag: #nucksforcup. A geotagging function uses photo posts to create a map.
“Anytime anybody tweets with ‘nucksforcup’ as the hashtag and-or adds a photo to that, they get added to this website,” Garratt told Business in Vancouver. “The steps are: You write your tweet, you geotag, you hit ‘option’ to add photo and then you send it.
“If you’re downtown at Rogers [Arena] and you tag yourself with some friends through a photo and you tweet about it, it’s automatically going to get picked up on this app and throw it on a map so that basically you can see Canucks fans all around the world that are cheering for the Canucks.”
Idea Rebel is no lightweight when it comes to social media marketing. It recently worked with Electronic Arts to create 10 million EA Sports Facebook fans.
Garratt said there is no commercial motive in the nucksforcup project, which he said will continue even after the Stanley Cup is over, no matter who wins.
He said he and his staff just wanted to show their support for the home team.
“We’re just excited about the Stanley Cup coming to town. It’s to help get fans connecting with each other.”
