Organic farming stalls nationwide

Interest in organic farming has waned slightly in B.C. according to data provided by the Canadian Organic Growers but there are still proportionally more B.C. farms devoted to raising organic crops than most other provinces.

The number of organic farms in B.C. decreased 2.4% between 2007 and 2008. In 2008, there were 444 certified organic farms in B.C., accounting for 12% of organic farming in Canada. Sixty-one farms in the province are transitioning to organic farming methods.

Saskatchewan was home to 1,039 farms, or, more than a quarter of organic farmers in 2008.

Ontario accounted for 18% of the national total.

Quebec had 935 certified producers in 2008, representing 25% of organic farmers in Canada.

Despite growth in some provinces, the number of certified organic farms in Canada decreased 1.8% to 3,713 in 2008.
