Ottawa moves forward on tobacco product cutbacks

Tobacco retailers will reduce their product lines July 5 when the sale of cigarettes, little cigars and blunt wraps with specified additives and flavouring agents will end.

Tobacco retailers will reduce their product lines July 5 when the sale of cigarettes, little cigars and blunt wraps with specified additives and flavouring agents will end.

The change is part of amendments to the national Tobacco Act, which Parliament passed last October to protect youth from tobacco.

"Our government has delivered on our promise to protect young people from unacceptable tobacco marketing practices," said federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq.

The minister met with high-school students in Ontario to discuss the changes, and reminded them that the July sale end date is the next step in a transition period that allowed retailers and manufacturers to adjust.

On April 6, the sale of little cigars and blunt wraps packaged in "kiddy-packs" of fewer than 20 units also ended.

Health Canada said it has kept Canadian retailer associations informed about the new requirements.
