Selling a company and exit strategies for angel investors are the topics of upcoming workshops.
The September 8 Exit Strategies workshop will feature guest speaker Basil Peters, author of Early Exits, who will share his experience on how to sell a private company.
Peters will also be speaking Tuesday at Simon Fraser University's School of Business at 5:30 p.m. It is the final seminar in the Start at the End: Exit Strategy series.
The mergers and acquisitions market is hot for private companies valued at $10 million to $15 million, said Angel Forum founder and workshop co-sponsor Bob Chaworth-Musters. He added that the trend today is for new companies to be bought at much earlier stages of growth than in the past. The workshop will focus on how to capitalize on the trend.
Not all successful business owners necessarily want to sell, however, which can be a problem for the angel investors who helped get them their start.
"Sometimes investors are at odds with the founders," Chaworth-Musters said. "The founders don't want to sell the company because maybe they are making very good salaries, but that's in conflict with the fact that the investors, after five or seven years, want their money back."
Chaworth-Musters said workshop presenters will provide case studies.
