PNE workers may strike over fair wages

Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) workers have overwhelmingly voted in favour of a strike.

Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) workers have overwhelmingly voted in favour of a strike.

CUPE Local 1004 business agent Steve Varty said Wednesday there was “frustration” that a deal couldn’t be reached between workers and the PNE eight months after the last labour contract expired.

Business in Vancouver reported in August that labour negotiations between the groups had broken down just days after the annual fair at the PNE began. (See “PNE workers say collective bargaining stalling” – BIV Business Today, August 23.)

At the time, PNE spokeswoman Laura Ballance said talks had not broken down between the two groups, but instead they had agreed to meet after the fair had ended.

CUPE, which represents Playland ushers, ticket takers, security guards and bartenders, among others, said the outstanding bargaining issues revolve around job security and increases in the cost of living.
