The federal government is funding more than $760,000 worth of safety upgrades at Prince Rupert Airport.
“We recognize that efficient and safe airports are vital to the local economies of smaller communities,” Steven Fletcher, minister of state for transport, said in a press release. “Strengthening the Prince Rupert Airport will create jobs directly and indirectly in this community.”
The Airports Capital Assistance Program will fund repairs to pavement joints on runway 13-31 and wet-dry chemical spreader, which will be used to de-ice and prevent ice formation on pavement surfaces.
“This funding is critical to our continuing ability to provide quality service to air travelers, as well as a key piece of transportation infrastructure supporting the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative,” Shane Deinstadt, vice-president of the Prince Rupert Airport Authority, said in the release.
The federal government is investing more than $20 million for 27 projects at 23 airports this year. Improvements include:
- replacing snowblowers and runway sweepers;
- buying runway de-icing and fire-fighting equipment; and
- and fixing runway pavements.
