Production at Vancouver-based copper and gold miner First Quantum Minerals Ltd.’s Zambian mine has resumed after a strike forced the mine to shut last week, the company announced January 6.

Negotiations with the labour unions are continuing.

“Every effort is being made to understand and resolve the issues behind the dispute, and we will keep our stakeholders informed of developments as warranted,” First Quantum’s chairman and CEO Phillip Pascall said January 4 when the strike was announced.

First Quantum, which sold its assets in the Democratic Republic of Congo for US$1.25 billion last week, also mines in Mauritania. It is one of many Vancouver mining companies searching for minerals off the beaten path.

Some others include:

  • Nevsun Resources Ltd. (TSX:NSU) and Sunridge Gold Corp. (TSX-V:SGC), which are developing gold and copper projects in Eritrea;
  • First Bauxite Corp. (TSX-V:FBX), which hopes to find aluminum in Guyana; and
  • Pebble Creek Mining Ltd. (TSX-V:PEB), which is active in India.
