Province commits $12 million to Geoscience BC

The provincial government has committed $12 million in new funding to support mineral and energy geoscience in the province through Geoscience BC.

The provincial government has committed $12 million in new funding to support mineral and energy geoscience in the province through Geoscience BC.

Geoscience BC president and CEO ’Lyn Anglin said the investment will allow the organization to keep operating for the next two or three years. Geoscience BC is an industry-led not-for-profit organization.

“It’s definitely good news for both our mineral industry and oil and gas industry partners who are a big part of delivering the message to the government that they really like the programs that we undertake,” Anglin said.

“This investment is going to mean that we can continue to develop and deliver programs that are designed to attract exploration and development investment to the province.”

She noted that Geoscience BC’s work has been described as “the R & D for exploration or the knowledge infrastructure for exploration and development.”

Water sourcing work, she said, is a key contribution the organization plays for the natural gas industry.

“We’ve been involved in a lot of collaborative projects with oil and gas companies working in Northeast B.C. on the issue of water sourcing, and what the sources of water are for the development of natural gas in the area – just helping them make good development decisions early on in the process.”
