The 23rd annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival (VQFF) is bigger this year than last year thanks to a $30,000 grant from the City of Vancouver’s 125th anniversary grants program.
Eight brightly coloured plaques document Vancouver’s queer history and human rights, the festival’s executive director Drew Dennis told Business in Vancouver August 5.
With 106 films from 18 countries shown August 11 to 21, this year’s 11-day event is as large as it was last year and is big enough to rank as Vancouver’s second largest film festival, after the Vancouver International Film Festival.
VQFF’s budget is about $700,000, with 20% coming from corporate sponsors like Cineplex Entertainment, TD Canada Trust, Telus Corp. and branding company B’STRO.
The rest of the budget comes from:
- government grants (35%);
- individual donations (29%); and
- box office and other sales (16%).
