Regina

Vancouver’s new housing price index (NHPI) may have risen 6.

Vancouver’s new housing price index (NHPI) may have risen 6.5% between June 2009 and June 2010, but it was new home buyers in Regina who saw the greatest increase during that period, according to a list of 21 metropolitan areas surveyed by Statistics Canada.

While the increase in the new housing price index in Vancouver was almost double the Canadian average of 3.3%, the index in Regina climbed 6.9%. But that ascent may be slowing, at least locally.

According to StatsCan, Vancouver’s NHPI lagged the rest of Canada when June 2010 was compared with May 2010.

While the index rose 0.1% in June across Canada following a 0.3% increase in May, Vancouver’s NHPI slipped 0.2%.

The top contributor to the overall monthly increase was Toronto and Oshawa (0.3%), followed by Ottawa-Gatineau (0.5%) and Montreal (0.2%).

The NHPI measures changes over time in the selling prices of new residential houses.
