Richmond's MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX:MDA) has signed a contract with NASA's Johnson Space Center to provide continued support for the space shuttle's robotic arms.

The contract includes engineering services to support the space shuttle's Canadarm and its inspection boom. The contract does not include the main robotic elements on the international space station.

The two-part contract includes an initial $39.5 million and an option for an additional $36.3 million to provide services through to 2010.

Work will be performed primarily at MDA's space missions facility in Brampton, Ontario.

Last November, MDA engineers helped save the future development of the international space station using the space shuttle's Canadarm and inspection boom to send an astronaut to repair a tear on one of the space station's new solar power arrays.

MDA's share price range during the past week: between $41.75 and $42.75; 52-week high: $53.82; 52-week low: $37.38.
