Rotating strikes inflict significant losses at Canada Post

Financial losses are mounting at Canada Post as a rotating strike by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) enters its 12th day.

Financial losses are mounting at Canada Post as a rotating strike by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) enters its 12th day.

Canada Post estimates it has lost more than $70 million in revenue. That’s on top of the wages it is still paying to striking workers.

Canada Post noted in a press release this morning that the uncertainty of where CUPW members will strike from day to day has made it difficult for the company to plan its logistics and transport network, let alone set staffing levels.

Today’s job action in Montreal and Toronto – the two largest metropolitan centres in Canada, accounting for more than 60% of national mail volume – will affect the whole postal network.

If rotating strikes continue to impact the business at this pace, Canada Post added that it will not be in a position to sustain its operations across the country.
