A new website is allowing Twitter users to see what trends and topics are being discussed by Vancouver’s Twitterati.

Vancouver is one of the 32 worldwide cities now covered by New York-based Sency, which was founded in 2009.

At Sency Vancouver, users can discover what’s being said within Vancouver at the moment.

The site’s search results are filtered to only show comments made by people posting to Twitter from a location within the city limits.

Sency Vancouver also displays a list, updated every four hours, of the most popular places and terms being visited or under discussion.

According to Sency, “PNE Parade,” “JJ Bean Coffee Roasters,” and “Yaletown Brewing Company” are among the popular places or topics being discussed on Twitter by Vancouverites this morning.

Sency founder Evan Britton said in an email that the company compiles its real-time location-based data by analyzing check-ins on the social media application Foursquare and by monitoring commentary across Twitter.

He said the company is in the process of refining its search results to prevent airports, company offices, train stations and other common locations from showing up in the list.

Britton said, “This [will] help the user to get a more relevant list of bars, hotels and restaurants which are popular in Vancouver right now.”

The company also publishes its list of popular Vancouver places on Twitter.

Sency is one of a number of new real-time search engines that scour the web for the most up-to-date conversations, comments and links posted by Internet users – as opposed to traditional search engines, which scour for websites that are deemed “relevant” to a search query.
