Servants Anonymous shares top spot for non-profits award

Surrey-based Servants Anonymous Society has been named co-winner of the William H. Donner Award for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services.

Surrey-based Servants Anonymous Society has been named co-winner of the William H. Donner Award for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services.

The $20,000 award – which Servants Anonymous shares with Community Living Campbellford-Brighton of Campbellford, Ontario – is the top award in the annual Donner Awards, which recognize the country’s best-run non-profit organizations.

Servants Anonymous also won an additional $5,000 Donner Award in the prevention and treatment of substance abuse category.

The Donner Awards judge participating non-profit organizations on their performance in 10 key areas, including management and governance, the use of staff and volunteers, innovation, program costs, and outcome monitoring. The Fraser Institute administers the awards on behalf of the Donner Canadian Foundation.

“There are millions of Canadians that donate to charities and non-profits every single year and, especially over the last two years, there’s been a heightened awareness or interest in how these non-profits are managed,” said Niels Veldhuis, director of non-profit studies for the Fraser Institute.

“The Donner Awards signal the best-managed non-profit organizations in Canada, so it’s one metric that both these charities can use, but also that Canadians can use when they’re deciding: Is this non-profit worthy of a donation?”

Other B.C. finalists for the awards were:

  • •Big Brothers Big Sisters, Quesnel;
  • •Pacific Assistance Dogs Society, Burnaby; and
  • •North Shore Volunteers for Seniors, West Vancouver.
