Star Trek alumni William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy showed they can still draw a crowd when they took to the stage at the Sheraton Wall Centre as the main attractions at this weekend's three-day Star Trek convention.
“I’m William Shatner and I am a Canadian,” the Montreal-born actor told fans, recalling his speech from the closing ceremony of the Vancouver Olympic Games in February.
The actors, who played Capt. James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock in the iconic 1960s TV series, were in town for a three-day Star Trek convention put on by California-based Creation Entertainment.
Shatner and Nimoy answered fan questions about the TV series and subsequent films as well as their other creative endeavors for more than two hours on Sunday. The ballroom was packed with hundreds of fans, many of which had donned their own Trek uniforms or green alien paint to get in on the sci-fi hysteria. The convention also included about half a dozen vendors selling memorabilia.
Both actors spoke about recent projects in B.C.
Shatner gave an impassioned speech about his fight to protect the province’s wild salmon stocks, while Nimoy recalled a recent supporting role in the Vancouver-shot TV series Fringe.
