Stimulus spending helps fast-growing small business

The recession has not prevented some of B.C.’s fastest growing companies from pursuing expansion plans. For some, the downturn actually helped them.

The recession has not prevented some of B.C.’s fastest growing companies from pursuing expansion plans. For some, the downturn actually helped them.

Jeremy Miller, owner of Vancouver’s Houston Landscapes, noted the company managed to win more than $1.2 million worth of government stimulus spending, which contributed to its record growth in 2009. The company ranked 14th on this year’s list of the top 100 fastest growing companies in B.C. published in this week’s edition of Business in Vancouver newspaper.

Those contracts included three B.C. Housing projects worth $575,000 and work at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and VanDusen Gardens worth $688,000.

He noted about 40% of the funding was allocated to labour costs, which helped him employ about 20% more employees. He projects 2010 revenue will grow to $4.5 million from $3.7 million last year.

More about Houston Landscapes and other expanding small businesses in B.C. are in this week’s print edition of BIV.
