Striking Teck workers at Elkview mine reject new deal

Teck Resources Limited (TSX: TCK.A and TCK.B) announced today that 57% of the employees at its Elkview operation in southeastern B.C. voted to reject a five-year collective agreement.

Teck Resources Limited (TSX: TCK.A and TCK.B) announced today that 57% of the employees at its Elkview operation in southeastern B.C. voted to reject a five-year collective agreement.

Last week Teck seemed confident that a conclusion would be reached between the company and Local 9346 of the United Steelworkers of America under the tentative collective agreement.

Work had been expected to resume at Elkview by Tuesday – but the current work stoppage that began on January 30 will continue.

The Elkview mine is located in the Elk Valley region of southeastern B.C., 15 kilometres from Sparwood and employees more than 700 people.

Teck plans to recommence discussions with the Elkview union bargaining committee aimed at reaching a new collective agreement.

Calls to Teck for comment were not returned by press deadline.
