The B.C. Liberal government introduced legislation Thursday to create a municipal auditor general (AGLG) office in Surrey.
“This office will support the goals of the families-first agenda by strengthening local government accountability and ensuring B.C. families receive the best possible return on investment for their taxpayer dollars,” Premier Christy Clark said in a release.
The AGLG’s primary purpose would be to help local governments find efficiencies in spending and improve program effectiveness by providing neutral, non-binding advice.
Victoria plans to spend $2.6 million to fund the office.
The provincial government appoints the AGLG for a maximum of two five-year terms.
