The Tahltan First Nation has approved two run-of-river hydroelectric projects in exchange for funding and jobs to support community development.
Last week, the First Nation, which includes members in Telegraph Creek, Dease Lake and Iskut, said it had voted in favour of project agreements for AltaGas’ (TSX:ALA) McLymont Creek and Volcano Creek power projects.
If built, the two projects would have an installed capacity of up to 88 megawatts (enough to power more than 22,000 homes) and sell power to BC Hydro via the Northwest Transmission Line.
Tahltan Nation members voted 71% in favour of the projects.
“We want to ensure that economic development benefits our people and our communities for current and future generations, as well balancing our interests in protecting our culture and way of life,” said Annita McPhee, president of the Tahltan Central Council.
“It’s a delicate balance, but we are working hard to ensure that we have a secure future in Tahltan Territory.”
The agreement signed with AltaGas includes funding, direct training and employment for Tahltan members.
The agreement also provides for revenue sharing, profit sharing and ownership in the projects.
AltaGas is also busy advancing its Forrest Kerr project along the Iskut River, a 195-megawatt run-of-river hydroelectric project.
