Taseko Mines Ltd. is now proposing to spend $300 million to preserve Fish Lake as a way to get federal approval to forge ahead with its gold and copper mine long known as the Prosperity Mine project.
The new proposal, dubbed New Prosperity, addresses concerns that Ottawa had about the company building its gold and copper mine.
“We have made significant efforts to address all the necessary requirements for final federal approval,” said Taseko president and CEO Russell Hallbauer.
“Prosperity is the seventh largest undeveloped gold-copper porphyry deposit in the world and, as such, has the ability to deliver economic value and social benefit on a national scale.”
B.C.’s Environmental Assessment Office had approved the project.
But, a federal review panel in November said the project would result in “significant adverse environmental effects on fish and fish habitat.”
