B.C. teachers have filed limited strike action to take effect when classes resume September 6.
The first phase of the strike will be to eliminate day-to-day administrative duties typically handled by teachers.
British Columbia Teachers Federation (BCTF) president Susan Lambert told Business in Vancouver August 31 that the action will include things such as:
- playground supervision;
- meetings with principals that do not directly involve student safety; and
- formal parent-teacher interviews.
Teachers will, however, still take attendance.
That means that they will have to use the controversial database software known as the British Columbia Enterprise Student Information System (BCeSIS).
Watch BIV in print next week for an in-depth report on that problem-plagued software system. The B.C. government and school boards have spent $100 million on the program, which the software owner is discontinuing after 2012.
“Where they are already taking attendance on BCeSIS, where that system is in place, we will be continuing with BCeSIS,” Lambert said. “Mind you, that whole framework is so fraught with crashing that I don’t how long it will last.”
