Telus to carry Windows tablet for mobile businesses

Burnaby telecom giant Telus (TSX:T) has jumped into the tech world’s booming tablet market with the launch of the Motion CL900 Tablet PC Thursday.

Burnaby telecom giant Telus (TSX:T) has jumped into the tech world’s booming tablet market with the launch of the Motion CL900 Tablet PC Thursday.

The company said it is the first Canadian carrier to offer the tablet, developed by Austin Texas-based Motion Computing.

Telus said the tablet is designed for small and medium-sized businesses that rely on Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows operating system.

“The majority of Canadian businesses use a Windows platform to manage their day-to-day activities,” said Jim Senko, Telus vice-president of small and medium business.

“The Motion CL900 Tablet PC solves some of the key issues our business customers are facing when working in the field or moving around an office by allowing them to run the Windows applications they depend on through a mobile, large-screen tablet that is both robust and light.”

The one-kilogram tablet is powered by Windows 7 Professional, and is available through Telus under a three-year contract for $999.

The device hits the market at a time when North America’s leading technology companies are scrambling to corner market share in an ever-expanding market for tablets.

Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad and Research in Motion’s (TSX:RIM) Playbook are among two of the most popular tablets on the market.

Telus also offers the iPad through its network.

At press time, Telus’ shares were down $0.47 to $52.65.
