Tinhorn follows Burrowing Owl

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards owner Sandra Oldfield intends to capitalize on the growing trend among Okanagan wineries to have a restaurant.

She told Business in Vancouver February 21 that she has invested $2 million to build a restaurant named Miradoro that will be leased and run by Le Gavroche restaurateur Manuel Ferreira.

She has snagged former Aurora Bistro owner and chef Jeff Van Geest to be the restaurant’s chef. The bistro will have 64 seats inside and 64 seats outside.

“We’ve had stop-and-gos on this for five years,” Oldfield said. “There’s just not that many places to eat in the south Okanagan.”

Years ago, nearby winery Burrowing Owl proprietors Jim and Midge Wyse spent millions of dollars to build a restaurant and guesthouses adjoining their winery.

Oldfield has four guesthouses at her winery, but she has no intention of renting those units out and getting into the bed-and-breakfast business.

“We save those [guesthouses] for charity auctions,” she said. “We won’t go the guesthouse route like Burrowing Owl did.”
