Vancouver Canucks legend Trevor Linden officially opened his Club 16 – Trevor Linden Fitness gym in Coquitlam this morning.

The facility’s main selling point, aside from its connection to a well known owner, is that its $15-per-month membership prices are lower than competitors such as Steve Nash Fitness World and Sports Club.

“We’ve worked hard to create an affordable, comfortable club designed for the average person,” said Linden. “The atmosphere will be friendly with a low intimidation factor and the equipment will be inspiring to use. We want getting into shape to be fun, regardless of fitness levels or experience.”

Linden partnered with Chuck Lawson, who owns She’s Fit! health clubs and has been in the fitness industry for 23 years.

Ron Zalko Fitness Centre owner Ron Zalko has told Business in Vancouver that he believes Linden may regret putting his name on his gym. (See “Gym owner regrets putting his name in his business ” – BIV Business Today, October 4, 2010.)

“It’s not always a good thing to put your name on a fitness club. That’s because there will be fallouts between you and some customers,” Zalko said. “The customer thinks he’s right and you think you’re right. Maybe they’re abusing equipment or not wiping the equipment down afterward. You might tell them that it’s not allowed or say, ‘please don’t do that’. Then you become the ass. They take your name and thrash it.”
