Both Canadians and Americans increased their trips across the border in July, according to Statistics Canada data released Tuesday.

Visits from the U.S. rose for a second consecutive month, increasing 2.3% in July to 1.71 million trips, following a 1.4% increase in June to 1.67 million trips. That follows two consecutive months of declines in May and April.

The bulk of the increased visits from the U.S. were by car, which reported a 4.6% increase, following a 0.3% increase in June.

Canadians also boosted their travel south of the border after cutting back in June. Trips to the U.S rose 3% to 3.77 million trips, compared with a 1.7% decline in June to 3.6 million. The increase was due to a 3.4% increase in the number of same-day car trips as well as a 2.6% increase in U.S. visits lasting one or more nights.

The number of visits to Canada from countries other than the U.S., however, fell 1.6%, with declines in most of Canada’s key tourist markets except Australia, China, India, the Netherlands and Italy.
