Vancouver alloys maker joins nuclear fuel working group

The vice-president of a Vancouver-based alloys manufacturer has been tapped to chair the World Nuclear Fuel’s new fuel technology working group.

The vice-president of a Vancouver-based alloys manufacturer has been tapped to chair the World Nuclear Fuel’s new fuel technology working group.

Jim Malone, vice-president of IBC Alloys Corp. (TSX.V:IB), will lead the newly formed group, which has been tasked with exploring the commercialization of alternative fuel types for the nuclear industry.

One application it will be exploring is high thermal conductivity of beryllium oxide fuel, which IBC has been jointly experimenting with along with partners Purdue and Texas A&M universities.

IBC Advanced Alloys develops and manufactures a variety of copper-based alloys and beryllium aluminum castings. Its products are used various industries, including nuclear power, automotive, oil and gas, electronics and aerospace.

Malone is recognized as nuclear fuel expert with more than 40 years of experience. He has served as vice-president of nuclear fuels at Exelon Corp. and is chairman of the board for Hathor Exploration Ltd., a junior uranium exploration and development company.
