One of Vancouver’s largest architecture firms has acquired two additional offices in Ontario as part of a recent acquisition spree.

Vancouver’s PBK Architects Inc. has closed the acquisition of ANO Architects Inc., which has offices in Timmins and Sudbury, Ontario.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but the purchase will add 25 employees to the company’s roster, increasing it to more than 100.

Elisa Brandts, PBK’s president and managing principal, said in an interview Tuesday night, the deal is part of the company’s growth strategy to expand its local presence in northern Ontario.

“It’s one of PBK’s most significant architectural acquisitions in that marketplace. We have an office in Timmins, and they have a longstanding relationship, so we know the firm reasonably well.”

The acquisition follows a previous one in March where the firm acquired a small office in Cornwall, Ontario, and another office in Thunder Bay.

The moves are meant to expand its local presence in smaller communities that may feel uncertain about dealing with larger firms.

“We find clients like to deal with relatively local, highly client-focused architecture firms. Smaller areas can feel intimidated by the larger firms.”

PBK was ranked 15th on BIV’s annual list of biggest architecture firms in Metro Vancouver (Issue 1042; October 13-19, 2009), with more than $4 million in local revenue.
