Kruger Products Ltd. has selected Vancouver's Nexterra Energy to supply the Montreal-based company with a biomass gasification system for its tissue mill in New Westminster.
The system will be the first of its kind for the pulp and paper industry. It is designed to convert locally sourced wood residue into a gas that will be used to generate electricity for the plant. The system will replace approximately 445,000 gigajoules of natural gas the plant uses annually.
The new system is expected to reduce the mill's annual energy costs by millions of dollars and reduce the plant's greenhouse gas emissions by more than 22,000 tonnes a year.
The installation comes months after the company completed a two-year testing program to confirm that the "syngas" developed through Nexterra's technology can replace up to 100% of the fossil fuels used in industrial boilers and lime kilns.
