Vancouver-based SmartDesign Group has won the contract to provide refined master planning, design and fit-out services for the retail operations at the New Doha International Airport, which is scheduled to open in July 2011.

The company will lead the overall retail strategy for the airport's duty-free shops, retail boutiques, food courts and restaurants. The project's first phase will open with 24,000 square metres of commercial spaces and expand to 32,000 square metres when completes.

The new international airport will be the home base and hub for Qatar Airways and will provide unconstrained operations for the new Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger airplane.

The first phase of the airport's design will accommodate 12 million passengers annually. Its total capacity is projected to be 48 million per year when fully operational.

SmartDesign, a retail design practice, specializes in the commercial development and design of airports. It has contributed to the design of more than 100 airports worldwide.
