Vancouver hits 97 food carts, provides vendor iTunes app

The City of Vancouver’s food cart program has expanded to 97 vendors and a free iTunes app that tracks vendors’ locations and hours of operation, the municipality announced this week.

The City of Vancouver’s food cart program has expanded to 97 vendors and a free iTunes app that tracks vendors’ locations and hours of operation, the municipality announced this week.

The program has added 19 new food carts since February, including a windervariety of international flavours, including Korean fusion, Baja-style tacos, matzo balls and seafood chowder.

Last year, 17 vendors helped launch the city’s expanded food-cart program with menus that included pulled pork, dim sum, crepes and Pan Asian offerings.

“Since expanding our street food program last year, we’ve broadened the range of available food options to offer the kind of diverse, tasty and nutritious food people told us they wanted,” Mayor Gregor Robertson said in a press release.

As part of the program’s expansion, the city solicited public feedback and vetted applicants through a high-profile panel of food industry and business experts. (See: “Notable local chefs to help choose new street food vendors” – BIV Business Today, February 22.)

Vancouver city council has directed staff to add up to 15 new street food vending locations each year for the next three years.

Interview requests to the city were not returned by press deadline.
