Vancouver has emerged as the clear leader in the WWF Canada’s Earth Hour List, which ranks Canadian cities according to their record on battling climate change.
The environmental charity developed the list by interpreting data related to climate change from the top 15 cities selected in Corporate Knights’ report 2011 Most Sustainable Cities in Canada.
Each city was ranked out of 10 points, with Vancouver easily coming out on top with a score of 8.1.
The point system was based on specific climate-change related indicators, including greenhouse gas emission reduction, municipal greenhouse gas reduction targets, renewable energy, green building and green transportation.
Toronto and Montreal were second and third in the rankings, with 7.2 points and 6.2 points respectively.
At a press conference, Josh Laughren, WWF director of climate and energy, said, “We need leadership at all levels of government to effectively tackle climate change. With determined federal and provincial support, we can do our part to fight global warming by building healthy, sustainable, livable cities.”
