The University of British Columbia plans to buy 103.6 hectares of land north of Kelowna to double the size of its UBC Okanagan campus.
On June 9, the UBC board of governors approved the $8.78 million purchase from the City of Kelowna.
“This is an unprecedented and extremely important event in the history of UBC,” said board chairman Brad Bennett.
“We’re grateful to the City of Kelowna for being such outstanding partners and for the opportunity to acquire this land.”
When UBC established its Okanagan campus five years ago, it acquired the former Okanagan University College’s North Kelowna campus, which sat on 105 hectares of land.
The acquisition of the new land is expected to be complete by the end of June. It will be funded by UBC from its discretionary endowment over the next 30 years.
UBC and the City of Kelowna are collaborating on plans to build a public trail and future roads on the property.
